1. Under no circumstances should you leave your car unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure about where you are and how far away it is to get help. If you have an infant or small child (or children), it is absolutely the best idea to STAY at the vehicle and bring help to you.

2. Use your cell phone or your emergency cell phone to put in a call for help to friends, family, neighbors and 911. Make sure several people are looking for you!

3. If it appears that traffic on your road will be slim to none, light two flares and put them at each end of your vehicle to flag attention to your disabled vehicle. Flares also indicate that a person is present with the vehicle that is incapacitated.

4. Put on your extra clothes and cover with blankets to stay warm. Don’t open the car doors except to get your emergency equipment! Conserve the heat inside the car and be very mindful of your activity.

5. Do not continually run the engine, particularly if the exhausts are buried in snow or someway obstructed. You run the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning by continually running the car. Make sure you bring out the carbon monoxide detector, put in the 9v battery, and keep it inside the car to alert you of any potential hazard. You know – it just puts you to sleep and then….well, let’s not let that happen!!!

6. If you have paid attention and kept the gas tank full to near-full, you can run the engine and heater for about 10 minutes per hour while you are waiting for help.

7. Now is the time to use the de-icer spray liquid. Right before you crank the car to warm it back up is the best time to leave the car and set flares or do other rescue activity. Before you warm the car, get out and spray the door locks, the door handles, the truck lock, the rims of all the doors (follow the door “crack” and spray the outline of the doors) and the windows. Leave at least one window open a little bit so that snow and ice don’t seal the car shut.

8. Eat any emergency food very sparingly. Particularly in rural areas, it could be much longer than you anticipate before help can arrive, especially if there are blizzard conditions. YOU MUST SURVIVE!
