Blizzard, Snowstore, or Ice Storm Coming? Prepare a Road Emergency Kit

If you are leaving on any length of trip from your house in weather where there is a potential for snow, ice or storm coming, you must be diligent in keeping most or all of these items in the trunk of your car. Blizzard, Snowstorm, Ice Storm Travel Survival Kit List

  •  Spray de-icer can be found at most automotive parts places. I just started using this last year and it has become a “must have” in the arsenal of winter travel

  • A Prepaid Cell Phone and cigarette-lighter connector / cable can be as indispensable as the spray de-icing fluid. Who would have thought 20 years ago that these things would be available, and be the life-line that would save many lives?

  • a blanket – preferably a thermal insulated blanket for extreme conditions/weather that is waterproof or water-resistant

  • “Skull caps” or toboggans – and you should have one for each potential passenger of your car at any time

  • extra snow / rain boots and insulated gloves – and you should have one for each potential passenger of your car at any time

  • an extra set of warm clothes, preferably made of insulating material or “thinsulate”

  • bottled water and canned food with a very small can opener. Include some hard candies

  • an ice scraper (which you should have an extra one in case one breaks or is lost)

  • a small shovel

  • two flashlights

  • windshield washer fluid

  • an extra pair of windshield wipers

  • 6-8 flares

  • High quality jumper cables – like Pro Circuit Products Jumper Cables

  • a tool kit with an assortment of wrenches and screwdriver

  • tire chains

  • a tire gauge

  • a spare tire with air in it

  • tire-changing equipment

  • a first-aid kit that includes basic materials for gauze bandages as well as

  • paper towels and window cleaner

  • a bag of abrasive material such as sand, salt or non-clumping kitty litter, which can provide additional traction if a tire gets stuck in snow.

  • Also, keep the gas tank as full as you can to prevent the gas lines from freezing.
